The novel, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens portrays the changes of a young boy when he is introduced to new opportunities. In stage one the young boy, Philip Pirrip or ‘Pip’s has just discovereding that he can be more than a blacksmith. He wants to be educated, wealthy, and a person of high importance, a gentlemen. Pip’s need and want to become this is mostly to impress Estella, the girl of his dreams. One visit to the Satis House and meeting of Estella changes Pip from the beginning to the end of stage one. In the beginning of stage one Pip wasis maintain literary present not ashamed of his home or place in society, because he only knew knows of his small corner of the world. Pip says, “But I loved Joe-perhaps for no better reason in those early days than because the dear fellow let me love him-and as to him my inner self was not easily composed” (Dickens 40). The author uses pathos here to describes Pip’s love for Joe despite him being a common blacksmith. Before, Pip’s exposure to the world, he iwas nieve naive and innocent. Dickens writes, “The gates and dikes and banks come bursting at me through the ist’ as if they cried as plainly as could be, ‘The boy with someone else’s pork pie! Stop him!’ The cattle came upon me with like suddenness, staring out of their eyes, and steaming out of their nostrils, ‘Halloa, young thief!’… ‘I couldn’t help it, sir! It wasn’t for myself I took it!’ Upon which he put down his head, blew a cloud of smoke out of his nose, and vanished with a kick-up of his hind-legs and a flourish of his tail’ (Dickens 15). Dickens uses personification and inference to show Pip’s guilt for stealing the pork pie to feed the convict. Pip’s guilt shows his innocence and how he believed the convicts threats of harming his family if he did not do this. Need a concluding transition sentenceAfter Pip’shis visit to The Satis House, he Pip starts to question and be ashamed of his family and his place in society. He states, ” ‘but Ii wish you hadn’t taught me to call knaves at cards jacks; and i wish my boots weren’t so thick nor my hands so coarse.’ ” (Dickens 68). The writer uses polysyndeton to express how? Pip’s wish to not be common. Pip is ashamed to be common and wishes to be more than he is. Pip’s desire to become a gentleman and his hunger for education motivated him to become more than a common blacksmith like Joe. Pip states,”The Felicitous idea occurred to me a morning or two later when I woke up that the best step I could take towards being uncommon was to get out of  Biddy everything she knew” (Dickens 71). Charles uses foreshadowing to show what can become of Pip’s future. This is Pip first step to his new future. The first stage of Pip’s life is just the beginning of Pip’s ‘gGreat expectation’. Pip doesdid not know that one visit would change him.
