The internetof things can be defined as devices or sensors
other than computers, smartphones, or tablets that connect, communicate or
transmit information with or between each other through the Internet 1. The
internet of things has a positive impact on health and safety, public service,
and the economy. The computational artifact I created was a cloud powered by
software that transferred and shared data to different types of devices to
represent the internet of things.


The infographic shown presents a big cloud in the middle
that is filled with algorithms, computing power, and data storage. This cloud
enables the aggregation, correlation, and analysis of vast quantities of data;
these large and dynamic datasets provide new opportunities for extracting
information and knowledge through apps, analytics, and applications. For
example, through the applications from the internet of things, certain software
updates have the chance to connect to sensors on cars which can be useful in notifying
drivers of dangerous conditions on the road. In addition, these software updates
occur wirelessly so there wouldn’t be any reason for the consumers to visit their
dealership 2.

There are several services which the government is obligated
to give to the people. These services are aided by the internet of things which
is very beneficial. The internet of things technologies can’t stop disasters
from happening but can be very useful for disaster preparedness.Take for
example the monitoring of forest fires: sensors on trees can take measurements
that indicate when a fire has broken out, or when there is a strong risk. Also,
the internet of things can help create energy. The Internet of things
application may range from a simple monitoring application to a complex
application that can provide efficient use of the energy in a building while
ensuring comfort in heat, electricity, and many more to building occupants3.

However, the internet of things is very insecure and can be
hacked through many different methods such as DNS spoofing, DNS amplification,
and onion routing. The internet of things has never had the robust security
that today’s global network needs. As currently, the internet has about more
than 3 billion users and numerous attempts to strengthen security were
prevented because of money, carelessness, and competing forces. Also, as a
November 2013 attack that took control of over 100,000 internet of things web
cameras, appliances, and other devices – highlight the problem. These
vulnerabilities have a heavy chance in being exploited by hackers 4.


Healthcare is a very important part of our lives, as it
helps to assess and evaluate one’s health. It can save people’s lives in
certain events and can also decrease health costs. The internet of things
includes an ever-growing list of medical devices used to improve patient care.
Devices can for instance, track symptoms like Parkinson’s tremors, which
provide reliable data for doctors trying to fine tune treatment. Also, when it
comes to hospital admissions, it was found that there was a 25% reduction in
numbers of bed days, a 19% reduction in numbers of admissions, and a
satisfaction score rating of 86% after the enrollment into this program5.

Safety is of the utmost importance since it affects your
mental and physical health, and potentially your life. The internet of things
affects this negatively in some ways. Devices that are connected to the
internet for monitoring analysis of health data and firmware updates have a
chance of being exposed. As, suppose hackers find a way to hijack these systems
to injure or kill their users. Diabetics and heart patients, biomedical
monitors, “smart” drug patches and even hospital devices such as robotic
surgical systems are all potentially vulnerable. The internet of things is not
reliable at times and can cause death or hospitalization 6.
