It was during my undergraduate studies in Biotechnology that I developed an interest in infectious diseases.
After securing the 1st rank and getting the ‘Best girl’ of the college award, my next goal was to do my masters
from one of the best universities in India. I got selected for M.Sc. programme sponsored by Department of
Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, which is one of most prestigious programmes in India.
My interest in microbiology gained fresh impetus during my Master’s study during which I worked on
“Expression of pyocinS2 and studying the antimicrobial activity of purified pyocinS2 on various Pseudomonas
isolates” as a part of my dissertation. Pyocins are bactericidal proteins produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa to
kill other bacteria of the same species. In cystic fibrosis patients, chronic lung infection with Pseudomonas
aeruginosa and the associated decline in lung function is the major cause of mortality. It has been reported that
pyocinS2 displays potent activity against P. aeruginosa biofilms, thus representing a potentially improved
therapeutic option. Pseudomonas causes chronic lung infection and there are various factors involved, like
quorum sensing and biofilm architecture which are important key players leading to virulence in Pseudomonas.
While reading about the research being done in Dr. Wakeman’s lab, I came across work that can provide
answers to my questions like the molecular basis of chronic bacterial infections in human and the role of
signaling molecules leading to chronic infections.
Having interned from a molecular biology lab has given me a perfect opportunity to glimpse at the career I am
entering. As my education has progressed, my determination to have a career in research has become stronger.
My experiences during dissertation have opened up the world of scientific research to me and have made me
realized that mistakes do not always have to hold you back, and often take you closer to your goal. There are a
lot of things, which often look easy to do at first glance, but a lot of hard work is involved in making them seem
that way. After standardizing some experimental protocols myself at the lab, I now understand the kind of effort
that goes into developing the techniques that make-work so much easier.
Seminars and presentations have been the highlights of my graduation years and they have taught me to apply
the knowledge I gained to achieve a particular aim. Also, they gave me a perfect opportunity to explore beyond
the syllabus. The sharing of ideas and new findings has always been an important part of my graduation life.
My life experiences have molded me into a hard working person that I am today. Having a keen interest in
Biology, specifically in molecular microbiology, I believe that working towards obtaining a Ph.D. degree in this
area can provide me an opportunity to deepen my understanding of the subject.
My future goals include establishing a career in research and educating people about science. Research in ‘The
Wakeman Lab’ has raised many relevant questions and I would like to be one of the people working towards
the answers.
