Mark Twain’s novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1876) is based on the life and experiences of a boy named Huckleberry
Finn. The plot of the novel centers on
Huck’s realistic perception regarding his surroundings and his compassion for
those who were being racially discriminated.

Although Huck Finn shows righteousness when talking about the societal laws and
considering it a sin to break any of the rules that were laid down by his
society. He declares that he will violate the laws “All right, then, I’ll go to hell,” (Twain and Czolgosz) because he is
determined in his heart and mind to do what is right and free the slave from
his captors as no human being deserves to be
imprisoned. The time during which this novel was written, racial segregation was an ongoing debate and had been
a cause of great concern for African Americans. During his adventures, Huck
plans on freeing the black slave Jim from the Phelps and takes on the help of
his friend Tom. Both boys plan out the escape for Jim but when the moment of
escape is finally there, Tom gets shot, and
Jim refuses to leave him behind. By showing compassion for the white boy, Jim
gives up his only chance of freedom and gets recaptured.

with the slaves shows that the author was concerned about the racial issues
that were prevalent during his time. By giving voice to Huck, the author has

period. There has been an ongoing debate over whether Twain’s novel should be taught to high school juniors or not. In my
opinion, the book should not be banned because it contains racial slurs and
the theme of racial discrimination. Huck may have been portrayed as a young boy who cheats, steals and lies to his
adults and occasionally uses the N-word which
may influence students negatively. However, there are also many good traits in
Huck as he stands for what is right and goes against his norms and values to
save the life of another who has been imprisoned
by his skin color. Twain’s novel ends the
cultural separation by writing on the theme of racism and addressing the issue (Alberti). Huck shows
compassion for other human beings despite what his society says. Twain is
setting an example for readers of all ages that every individual should show
compassion for another being. People should know the difference between right
and wrong, and if doing the right thing
means breaking the laws then they should just do it as well (Chadwick). Teaching this
novel to students will not only help them in understanding the situation of the
society Pre and Post Civil War but will also guide them in making the right
decisions when it comes to cases where
race matters.

To conclude, students
should be allowed to read the mentioned novel as it highlights racial segregation
and the issue of slavery. By doing so, the teachers will be helping students not
only overcome the misunderstandings that they might have when dealing with this
topic but it will also boost up their confidence regarding class participation
that will be based on the current situation of racism in the Western world.

Therefore, schools should give high school students the opportunity to read
Twain’s novel in classrooms.
