John Locke was one of the most important and influential philosophers ever, but he’s is not
the only important philosopher. The French Enlightenment drew his ideas, as did the Founding
Fathers of the American Revolution, like George Washington. John Locke was born in 1632 into
a well to do Somerset family. He also made important contributions to education, theology,
medicine, physics, economics, and politics.
Another enlightenment thinker is Voltaire, he was a French philosopher and writer of the Age
of Enlightenment. His intelligence, wit and style made him one of France’s greatest writers and
philosophers, despite the controversy he attracted. Voltaire was introduced to the Enlightenment
through the liberal and natural views of England’s philosophers. His heroes were Locke, Newton
and Francis Bacon. He appreciated the liberal, free society established in England and adopted
many of its ideas.
There is another philosopher named Adam Smith was a Scottish political economist and
philosopher. He has become famous by his influential book The Wealth of Nations in 1776.
Smith was the son of the comptroller of the customs at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. Adam Smith
had not been one to let religious attitude restrict his thinking. He believed that more wealth to
common people would benefit a nation’s economy and society as a whole. In The Wealth of
Nations, Smith described a self-regulating market.
Mary Wollstonecraft left home and dedicated herself to a life of writing. While working as a
translator to Joseph Johnson, a publisher of radical texts, she published her most famous work.
She believed in the Rights of Woman because she knew how unfair women’s rights were
compared to men’s. She declared that both women and men were human beings endowed with
inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. She called for women to become
educated.She died 10 days after her second daughter, Mary, was born.
