Most of English language learners when starting their journey to learn English language, usually encounter four language skills reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Which inside they found another sub-skills or contents which without they cannot master the target language. learning vocabulary is the essential key which leads students and prepare them to learn any other skill, which without student cannot produce correct language. It`s not possible to ask a student to read, write, or speak without a good knowledge in the vocabulary meaning and it`s use. Schmitt (2000) described the the knowledge in vacbulary as (lexical knowledge) which according to him, obtaining this knowledge leads to language competence and has a paramount importance to second language acquisition. By reviewing the importance of learning vocabulary to the second language acquisition we have to clarify the relationship between vocabulary and language in broader way. According to Nation (2001) acquiring language totally depends on the number of vocabulary the learner already knows in the second language and helps the learner to produce language. The aim of this research is to show that using pictorial dictionary weather it`s E-pictorial dictionary or a paper pictorial dictionary will be more beneficial to teach students vocabulary of the target language and makes this process easier.
Literature review/ previous studies
Teaching vocabulary inside classroom to EFL can sometimes be a very difficult process, and it also a barrier for teachers when they show the words and it`s meaning to their students and the next day students forget anything about these words because they simply cannot connect the new word and it`s equivalent meaning in their mother tongue, and as a result to this they cannot use it or produce a sentence in the target language. in this case the teacher needs to find or create new methods to enable students remember the meaning easily and improve their memory other than listening to the new word, write it down in an example, and remember this word the next day to be asked to use it in a different example.
Teaching vocabulary using visual aids turned to be useful for EFL learners no matter what teaching method was used. According to (Carpenter & Olson, 2012) using any visual aids to teach new words in the target language is very helpful and enables EFL students to remember easier than the conventional way. It also has been established that using visual aids are very useful for learners with disorders especially those with autism. (Heflin & Alaimo 2007). There are many ways of using visual aids and there is no particular way that teacher would and accredit as the best. And this process needs a great effort of preparing the material and drawings in order to convey the meaning to the EFL learner without wasting time. The aim of this research is to enable the process of self learning and help students improve their memory so they can acquire the meaning of the new word and use it whenever they want. A process like this can be facilitating when connecting the meaning of the a new word in the target language with a concept or a situation so they will be able to use it in a similar situation in the future, in this way students will achieve the goal of learning the foreign language which is producing spoken or written the target language easily.
Using pictorial dictionary helps teachers to visualize the situation to their students to make them aware of where and when to use such a vocabulary. In other words some new pictorial dictionaries are organized in a good way to show the abstract meanings, situations, and names of objects in life.
