Dear Sir/Madam,My name is Subhajit Bandopadhyay and I am applying for the Ph.D. program in Computer Science at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). I was selected as a Masters student in Pondicherry University in a highly competitive exam conducted all through India. Given that I have successfully completed a Masters thesis, I understand the procedure of research and how to work through it. In addition, I have gained a strong programming and system design experience, while working as Software Engineer at Hinote Systems for more than 2 years. With a continued exposure working in different labs with PhD students and professors, my understanding of research as well my research interests are very well defined. The Ph.D. program in Computer Science at SUTD is the best fit for my academic and career aspirations. In terms of research, I find my interests to be a lot identical to the interests of Prof. Dr. Pawel Szalachowski from SUTD.My primary research objective and interest is in the area of cryptography and security. The areas that I look forward to work on but not limited to, include applied cryptography and designing of security protocols, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, program analysis & verification, zero-knowledge proofs, complexity theory, formal verification of security protocols. With a strong theoretical computer science background and programming experience, I believe that I would make an ideal PhD candidate.I believe teaching is an integral part of doing research. Having taught Data Communications and Networking in class at Masters level, I realized that organizing data and presenting it in a simple yet very effective manner is a skill that a researcher must possess in order to help students better understand the core concepts. Pursuing a career in research, either in the academia or as a researcher in the IT industry would be my choice after completing Ph.D.From my continued discussions with Dr. Pawel Szalachowski, I have been very interested to explore blockchain security in Internet of Things. As encouraged by him, I would like my application to be considered for the SUTD-I2R thematic program on Industrial IoT, which would be under the supervision of Dr. Pawel Szalachowski from SUTD, and co-supervised by Dr. Sun Sumei from Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR.I would love to work on blockchain applications. Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM, quoted “What the internet did for communications, blockchain will do for trusted transactions”.Having worked on problems such as outsourcing of proof of work in bitcoin, I had the opportunity to explore more about blockchain. In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that I am very keen and enthusiastic in joining the team. I hope to start working soon and am willing to walk the extra mile to actively teach, code, collaborate and work with researchers in the group.Sincere thanks,Subhajit Bandopadhyay
