Now a days peer pressure is a
powerful influences on behavior and classic excuses.Peers play a large role in
the social and emotional development of children and adolescents.Their
influence begins at an early age and increases through the teenage years. It is
natural, healthy and important for children to have and rely on friends as they
grow and mature.Peers can be positive and supportive. They can help each other
develop new skills,or stimulate interest in books, music or extracurricular
activities. However, peers can also have a negative influence. They can encourage
each other to skip classes, steal, cheat, use drugs or alcohol,or become involve
in other risky behaviours. The majority of the teens with substance abuse
problems began using drugs or alcohol as a result of peer pressure.Kids often
give in to peer pressure because they want to fit in.They want ot be liked and
they worry that they maybe left out or made fun of if they don`t go along the
group.(American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry,2012)

According to Dr. Ma. Cecilia Conaco, psychologist and Dean
of College at Saint Theresa`s College – Cebu, teenagers face a lot of pressure
and their efforts conform to their peer group since “It cultivates self-esteem
if you are accepted bt the group.” “The peer group is the strongest reference
group for the adolescent. Because it seems to be the most potent contextual
group of teenages, then it holds a major reward (acceptance) and punishment
(rejection) ability”,stated Dr.Conaco. At a time when teenagers are widely
conforted with identity issues, peer pressure is at its greatest. Ion order for
them to discover who they are and establish their identity as individuals, they
tend to “see themselves in the context of the others around them.Teenager who
lack care and guidance are likewise vulnerable to peer pressure.Dr.Conaco
pointed out that many of today’s adolescent belongs to broken families, either
because of partental conflicts or beacause of parents working overseas.Due to
the absences of adult figure they lean on their friendfs to support
instead.According to Dr.Conaco, parents play a large role in their children`s
emotional and social development.(Verarose I. Escuadro,2009)
